A symptom is a message that has run out of quieter ways to arrive.

I do not say that to diminish it. Pain is real, and it deserves real treatment. I say it because in more than a thousand sessions I have almost never met a symptom that was only itself.

What I have met, again and again, is a process with three layers.

The physical layer

This is the layer medicine sees, and it deserves respect. Hormones, tissue, inflammation, deficiency, structure. Something measurable has changed, and it can be measured, treated, supported. Anyone who tells you to ignore this layer is asking you to be foolish.

But the physical layer is often the last layer to speak, not the first. It is the one that becomes visible after the earlier ones have been unheard for long enough.

The energetic layer

Many traditions describe the body as having a flow: call it chi, prana, meridians, the field, the subtle body. You do not have to adopt the vocabulary to notice the phenomenon. Everyone knows the difference between a body that is circulating and a body that has gone still and tight in one place.

Where life is repeatedly constricted, the constriction tends to localise. A person who has spent years not saying what they mean carries it in the throat and jaw. A person braced against loss carries it in the chest. This is not poetry. It is simply where they hold.

The emotional and psychospiritual layer

Here is the origin story: the belief formed early, the grief that was never allowed, the anger that was punished, the shame that arrived before language did.

In the sessions I have sat in, this is where symptoms most often begin, and often where they let go.

The order matters

Most of us try to heal from the outside in: fix the tissue, then the energy, then, if there is time, the feelings. It rarely holds, because the deeper layer keeps writing the same instruction into the shallower one.

Healing tends to move the other way. The belief is seen and released. The grief is allowed to move in a state where it can move rather than overwhelm. The old agreement is revoked. And then the body, which has been holding a position it no longer needs to hold, begins to let go.

That is the point at which physical work often starts to work better, because the system is no longer fighting itself.

What this does not mean

It does not mean the illness is your fault. I have never met anyone who became ill on purpose, and blame is a poor healer.

It does not mean you should stop treatment. Work at the deeper layers alongside medicine, never instead of it.

It does not mean every symptom has a hidden meaning. Sometimes a body is simply short of something it needs.

What it does mean is that when the physical layer has been cared for and the symptom persists, the question is worth widening.

Three questions worth sitting with

What have I been swallowing? What has been true for years and never said aloud?

What am I still carrying that was never mine to carry?

What did I agree to, long ago, that I would not agree to now?

You do not have to answer them today. But they are better questions than why is my body doing this to me.

The body is not doing anything to you. It is doing something for you, in the only language it has, and waiting to be understood.
